Note for Biostats VHM 801 course: Textbook
As in previous years, for the fall semester of 2021 students of VHM 801 have multiple
choices, as outlined below, to use a textbook that matches their
background and interest:
- a comprehensive text for the life sciences:
Brigitte Baldi & David
Moore: The Practice of Statistics in the Life Sciences, 3rd/4th ed., WH Freeman;
link to page for 4th ed. at MacMillan/ WH Freeman website,
- a comprehensive general text:
David Moore, George McCabe & Bruce
Craig: Introduction to the Practice of Statistics, 7th ed. (or later), WH
Freeman
(the textbook of previous years, so it might be possible to
borrow or purchase it cheaply); link
to page for 10th ed. at Macmillan/WH Freeman website,
- the bare minimum:
Scott Stephens: Introduction to
Statistics: Think & Do, V4.1, available from The Worldwide Center of
Mathematics,
- other textbooks... may be adequate as well, for example one of the free/open source textbooks
available (e.g., Illowsky B,
Dean S: Collaborative Statistics), depending on the needs of the student. Contact the
instructor if you want to use another textbook.
In addition to a textbook, the course material will include lecture
handouts and additional notes. Note that e-books cannot be brought along on a
laptop, tablet or smartphone for in-class course exams.
